How Wind Ready forecast-window alerts work

Wind Ready checks weather-model forecasts against your selected wind preferences. A forecast window is a period matching those rules, rather than a reading from a live wind sensor.

By the Wind Ready team · Product guidance from the app's publisher · Updated

1. Choose your spot and conditions

Save a beach, lake, bay or launch point. Set a below-threshold wind preference for lighter winds or an above-threshold preference for stronger winds. Choose your preferred direction, days, hours and how far ahead you want to look.

For example, a below-threshold rule can help you look for a lighter-wind paddle, while an above-threshold rule can help you look for a wind-powered session. Those are personal preferences, not an assessment of safety.

2. Discover matching forecast windows

Wind Ready looks for forecasts that match your whole selected period, with opportunities up to 14 days ahead where data is available. If the full period does not match, you may see shorter options separately. A shorter option should not be mistaken for a match covering all your chosen hours.

Pro discovery alerts flag new matching forecast windows. They are based on periodic checks of forecast data; they are not an instant alarm when measured wind crosses a threshold.

3. Monitor the window you choose

Discovery and monitoring do different jobs. Discovery helps find opportunities. Monitoring follows a particular window you decide to track. Pro monitoring can provide reminders, an opening notice if forecast conditions match and condition-change updates while that window remains active.

Activity keeps upcoming and past monitored windows together. A shared window or calendar entry helps you organise the plan, but it does not freeze the forecast. Recheck the current details as your outing approaches.

4. Understand what affects delivery

Alerts require Pro access, notification permission and an internet connection. Quiet hours pause notifications during the times you select. Forecast availability, changing forecasts, device settings and connectivity can affect what you see and when a notification arrives.

If an alert does not arrive, check your access, permission, quiet hours and saved preferences. A selected time period may simply have no full match. See support if you need help.

Common questions

Do I need to share my location?

No. Location permission is optional. You can search for a place manually or choose a spot on the map.

Can forecasts change after I receive an alert?

Yes. An alert reflects a forecast at the time it was checked. Monitoring helps you follow a chosen window as the forecast develops, but it cannot guarantee the eventual conditions.

Does a notification mean the conditions are safe?

No. It means the forecast met the relevant preferences. It is not an emergency warning or an assessment of your skills, equipment or local hazards.

Wind Ready uses weather-model forecasts, not live wind measurements. Forecasts can change and local conditions may differ. It supports planning; it is not an emergency warning service or a guarantee of safe conditions. Check official warnings and local conditions before heading out.
