Start with the conditions you want
A kayaker looking for lighter winds and a windsurfer waiting for wind are asking different questions. Your app should make your preferred wind speed, direction, location and available hours clear. An alert is most useful when you can tell which conditions triggered it and when the opportunity is forecast.
Wind Ready is an iPhone app built around that planning workflow: choose your conditions, discover matching forecast windows and monitor the window you decide to track.
What should you compare?
| Your need | What to check | Wind Ready's approach |
|---|---|---|
| Lighter winds | Can you choose a maximum wind speed? | A below-threshold preference for lighter-wind plans. |
| Stronger winds | Can you choose a minimum and preferred direction? | An above-threshold preference with a direction rule. |
| Time to get out | Does the forecast match the hours you selected? | Matching windows for your selected days and hours; shorter options may be shown separately. |
| Following a plan | Can you track a chosen opportunity? | Window monitoring, reminders and forecast-change updates with Pro. |
| Wind right now | Do you need a nearby station's measurements? | Weather-model forecasts, rather than live station measurements. |
Where Wind Ready fits
Consider Wind Ready when your main question is: “When does the forecast match my conditions during the hours I'm free?” Save a spot, choose a wind limit and direction, and let Pro alerts flag new matching forecast windows. You can then monitor a chosen window, share it with someone or add it to your calendar.
The same approach serves kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing and kitesurfing, windsurfing and sailing. Your preferences determine what counts as a match.
How does it compare with established wind apps?
Wind alerts are not exclusive to Wind Ready. Windfinder advertises alerts for windy or calm conditions. Windy.app describes forecast alerts using speed, direction, duration and time preferences. WindAlert offers forecast alerts and alerts based on actual wind readings. If live station observations are essential, compare station coverage at your exact spot.
Choose based on the workflow you prefer, the information you need and how the app performs at your spots. This guide is published by Wind Ready; it is not an independent test or a measured claim that one app forecasts more accurately than another.
Free and Pro: what is included?
Wind Ready is free to download on iPhone. Free includes one saved spot and today's wind forecast. Pro adds multiple saved spots, extended forecast planning, automatic alerts and window monitoring. Eligible users can try Pro for 14 days with no payment and no automatic charge. Current subscription prices and eligibility are shown in the app.
Questions people ask
Which app can alert me about lighter winds?
Wind Ready supports a below-threshold wind preference with Pro forecast alerts. Other apps also offer calm-wind alerts, so compare the settings and planning workflow rather than assuming that feature is unique.
Does a matching forecast mean I should head out?
No. A match means the forecast meets your selected rules. It does not assess your skills, equipment or every hazard at the location.
Wind Ready uses weather-model forecasts, not live wind measurements. Forecasts can change and local conditions may differ. It supports planning; it is not an emergency warning service or a guarantee of safe conditions. Check official warnings and local conditions before heading out.
